Known as 人参 (rénshēn) in Chinese, ginseng has held a significant place in traditional Chinese botanical knowledge for over two thousand years. Its name, meaning "human root", reflects the distinctive shape of its branching roots, which were often thought to resemble the human body.
Recorded in ancient herbal texts such as the Shennong Bencao Jing, ginseng was traditionally associated with vitality and longevity. Particularly prized were roots that had grown slowly in the wild, where age, shape and origin contributed to their perceived value.
Beyond its traditional uses, ginseng became a symbol of patience and the passage of time, reflecting a cultural appreciation for the qualities that nature develops slowly.
