Known as 竹 (zhú) in Chinese, bamboo has held a special place in Chinese art, literature and philosophy for centuries. Its upright stems have traditionally symbolised integrity, while its ability to bend without breaking represents humility and resilience.
Bamboo is one of the Four Gentlemen, alongside plum blossom, orchid and chrysanthemum. Frequently depicted in ink paintings, these four plants embody virtues admired by Chinese scholars, with bamboo particularly associated with strength of character and moral integrity.
